UPAA-W Funds Two Freshman Scholarships: UPAA-W Scholarship and Estrella Espejo Memorial Grant

(Ike Pahm)

UPAA-W continues to uphold its commitment to educational empowerment by funding two significant scholarship programs for incoming freshmen at the University of the Philippines.

On August 22, 2025, UPAA-W formalized its partnership with UP Diliman (UPD) through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed at Quezon Hall. This agreement established by the UPAA-W Scholarship, a one-year grant administered by the UPD Office of Scholarships and Grants (OSG). The scholarship will support two deserving UPD freshmen with a one-time book allowance and a monthly stipend for five months, renewable based on academic performance.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Have an average grade of 2.5 or better
  • Be enrolled in at least 15 units
  • Have no failing or incomplete grades
  • Come from a household with an annual gross income of PHP500,000 or less

Present at the MOA signing were UPD Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, UPAA-W President Joselito U. Conti, OSG Officer-in-Charge Christine C. Hernandez, and Mark Raphael G. Conti.

On the same day, UPAA-W also renewed its commitment to the Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship, this time in partnership with the UP System. This scholarship, honoring the legacy of Estrella J. Espejo (UP Class 1963), will benefit a total of nine scholars in the course of twelve years from across the UP System. It was made possible through the generosity of Drs. Evalynne and John Pickeral.

The Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship offers similar benefits, a book allowance and monthly stipend for five months—and is open to first-time freshmen across all UP campuses. Applicants must be natural-born Filipino citizens, have passed the UPCAT, and meet academic and income requirements like the UPAA of Wisconsin Scholarship.

The MOA was signed by UP President Angelo A. Jimenez and UPAA-W President Joselito U. Conti, with Hernandez and Mark Raphael G. Conti serving as witnesses.

UPAA-W is proud to support the next generation of UP scholars and remains committed to fostering academic excellence and opportunity through meaningful alumni engagement.
