The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Wisconsin celebrated its golden anniversary on June 30, 2024, at the Historic Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee. The event, aptly titled “24K Gold in 2024,” was a resounding success, attracting a full house of 300 attendees.
The evening featured a keynote address by the Vice President for Finance of the University of the Philippines, Iryn Balmores, who was sent as a special envoy by UP President Angelo Jimenez. President Jimenez also shared his congratulatory message via video. Ms. Balmores’ visit from the Philippines underscored the deep connections and enduring ties between the alumni and their alma mater.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a well-deserved service award to Joselito Conti, recognizing his significant contributions to the association. A moving video presentation showcased the scholarship recipients both in the Philippines (Call to Action video) and the United States (Gratitude and Success video), highlighting the impact of the association’s philanthropic efforts.
Entertainment started off with an uplifting performance by the Philippine Center Strummers, a 22-member ukulele group, which created a lively and joyful atmosphere. A unique “Dance of the Decades” performance brought together members of UPAA-W, who danced to music representing the decade they were students at UP. This creative display emphasized the 50-year gap between the oldest and youngest members, showcasing the association’s rich history.
Adding to the celebratory spirit, the “Community Dance,” set to Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration,” featured dancers from different decades partnered with community leaders from various FilAm organizations in Wisconsin. This special number highlighted the strong collaborations between these organizations, all united in their mission to serve the community.
The gala was particularly meaningful as it brought together families from 16 of the 22 original UPAA-W charter members, reaffirming the enduring bonds within the community. A touching in-memoriam video by Fe Visaya deeply moved the audience, with many shedding tears as they remembered those who had passed.
The “24K Gold in 2024” gala was a fitting tribute to the association’s 50 years of camaraderie, service, and commitment to education, leaving attendees with lasting memories and a renewed sense of purpose. Congratulations to the Gala Committee, ably chaired by Dr. Violeta Singson. Committee members included Deanna Cruz, Gerry and Jojo Ramos, and Lucy Sloan.
